The Origins of Spa Relaken

Relaken was born from the memories and spirit of its founder, Akemi Yamamoto.
She grew up at the foot of the sacred Takachiho mountains in Miyazaki — a land steeped in myth and surrounded by pure
air, endless stars, and the gentle rhythm of nature.
Each morning, the scent of incense drifted through her home, where her mother arranged seasonal flowers in quiet
harmony.
Through these moments, Akemi learned to feel beauty with all her senses — in fragrance, color, sound, and stillness.
Running through the mountains as a child, she came to know the warmth of the earth, the scent of the wind, and the calm
of the night sky.
These memories became the essence of the healing spaces she would later create.
At Relaken, we carry forward that spirit — blending Japanese tradition, natural materials, and heartfelt hospitality to offer a
sanctuary where the five senses find peace and balance.

The Meaning Behind the Name “Relaken”

・Ri (利) — To care for others, easing the heart
・Raku (楽) — To relax deeply, inside and out
・En (園) — A place the soul longs to return to

Akemi Yamamoto

Spa Relaken was born from the vision of founder Akemi Yamamoto, who grew up in the serene, sacred landscape of Kirishima in southern Japan. Surrounded by mountains, silence, and nature, and raised by devout Buddhist parents, she was deeply influenced by the calm and reflective spirit of Zen.

Zen teaches us to find essence in stillness and harmony within ourselves. This philosophy lies at the heart of everything we do—from the design of our spaces to the way we welcome our guests.
Each element at Relaken is carefully chosen to soothe the senses: natural materials like wood, bamboo, and washi paper, soft ambient lighting, and a cup of custom-blended herbal tea after every treatment.

We believe that true healing happens when your senses gently relax and your breath deepens.

Relaken means:
Ri (利) – To relax and care for others
Raku (楽) – To feel at ease, inside and out
En (園) – A place your soul wants to return to
